Description
In the recent years there has been an increased research interest in learning through practice, and a critique of the traditional views on learning where learners are seen as islands, isolated from the world (Dreyfus, 2002; Heidegger, 1962; Lave, 1988). Educational research is criticized for dwelling on verbalized knowledge (Nielsen & Kvale, 2003, p. 16) and being centered on the singular student as an individual. Taking the perspective that learners are being-in-the-world (Dreyfus, 2002; Heidegger, 1962) one will direct attention to the time, place and the situatedness of the learner (Lave, 1988; Lave & Wenger, 1991) and the communities of practice. An important part of being in communities or being-in-the-world is the perception of others, observing what others do or receiving instructions on what to do and how to do it. The purpose of this paper is to examine imitation as a learning strategy in kayak communities located in the south-eastern parts of Norway. In the words of Bengtsson (1993), no human (or sea kayaker) is either solely individual or entirely collective. This paper will focus on bridging that gap by putting forward the kayakers mediated understanding of copying and imitation as a learning practice, and using this information to understand how intermediate and expert sea kayakers learn, in doing.
